Can you imagine knowing your job will be ripped from your grasp if you don't achieve the highest reward in your field? That is how managers in the premier league feel every day. Recently we have seen a pattern be created that if a manager in the English premier league doesn't bring trophies to the club, there job is in question. There are many reasons why this pattern has been created, but are they good reasons? It's hard for a manager to get settles into his new club when given only a few months with the team. So why are mangers in the premier league getting fired so easily? What is the overlying reason? There are many answers that come to mind but i'd like to focus on just a few.
2. Background
The English premier league is known for a few big name coaches who have been at their clubs for many years. Managers such as Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United, and Arsene Wenger of Arsenal. But besides these two men, their counterparts at other clubs in the premier league are still settling in at their new clubs. We've seen a pattern develop over the past couple of years that if a manager doesn't bring trophies to the club, their job is in question. Clubs used to keep their managers for many years at a time back in the day, but now a days, managers are dropped and replaced sometimes within 3 or 4 months. This was unheard of until just a few years ago.
3. Anecdote
Roberto Mancini, the former manager of Manchester City, brought the club its first premier league trophy in 30 years, the next year he was relieved from his duties for not achieving this goal for a second year in a row. You'd think that a club that hasn't brought home any hardware for years and years would be forgiving if they didn't win it every year after. But Mancini was sacked none the less. There are many more examples just like this at other clubs as well. So why is this pattern developing? I'd like to break it down and get to the root of it's cause.
I think your third lead in is really engaging. The story powerfully illustrates the problem with winning one year and losing your job the next.
