Exercise 5.3

Today, for our english class we were told to bring a copy of our rough draft for our third essay. We started class off by swapping our papers with a partner and letting them go through and read our paper. Then once they were done, they were asked to write down what our what they thought our thesis was, my partner, Cody got mine correct which was encouraging. That means that I am communicating my point well in my paper. We were then told to cut our draft up and separate it by paragraphs. We were to make a keep pile and a discard pile. I kept all my paragraphs because they all supported my main idea. Next, we had to read the paragraph and give it a reason for what it does for our main idea. The five things the paragraph could do are: provides important evidence, explains something that is key to understanding what I am trying to say, illustrates a key concept, helps establish the importance of what I am trying to say, and raises a question that I must explore. Lastly, for this blog post we are told to find at least two ways to rearrange our paragraphs and develop two different set-ups. Finally, after this we need to come up with some questions we had for this assignment.

1. What made the set-ups different?

I could see that once i switched the order around the paper did not flow as well. I had thought about the order in which i placed my paragraphs when originally writing them so i think it disturbed the flow rather than helping it.

2. What did you learn?

I learned that it is called a rough draft for a reason. I saw that that my draft needs a lot of work and order of paragraphs, transitions, and flow are something I should look into even more to make sure i am really hitting it on the head in my paper.

3. How did this activity help you re-see you work?

I saw that I need to add more sources and I need to add more quotes as well. It is a lot of my voice, and me sharing my ideas rather than me having a conversation about the topic through other sources.

Exercise 5.1

In Class today we went through and analyzed our rough draft. We took 2 highlighters, highlighting your voice and opinions in one color, and highlighting anything you used from an outside source in another color. Once we did this we are supposed to go back and analyze the colors and see the patterns in which we are writing. Once both these steps were complete, we were asked the following questions:

1.     Which color dominates?
2.     Are you turning over too much of the text to your sources?
3.     Are you ignoring them and rattling on too much about what you think?
4.     Or does your source use seem appropriate to support your purpose?

After reflecting on my paper, I see that I used mostly my opinions and my voice to write. This may be because i am very knowledgable on the topic and have opinions that need to be voiced. But i definitely need to incorporate more sources and mix my voice with others in the paper. I have big sections of my voice, but i do have good connections between my voice and my examples from other sources.

Exercise 4.3

In this post, we are beginning to shape our intro to our paper. This exercise requires us to write 3 different intros, my intros are listed below.

1. Question

Can you imagine knowing your job will be ripped from your grasp if you don't achieve the highest reward in your field? That is how managers in the premier league feel every day. Recently we have seen a pattern be created that if a manager in the English premier league doesn't bring trophies to the club, there job is in question. There are many reasons why this pattern has been created, but are they good reasons? It's hard for a manager to get settles into his new club when given only a few months with the team. So why are mangers in the premier league getting fired so easily? What is the overlying reason? There are many answers that come to mind but i'd like to focus on just a few.

2. Background

The English premier league is known for a few big name coaches who have been at their clubs for many years. Managers such as Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United, and Arsene Wenger of Arsenal. But besides these two men, their counterparts at other clubs in the premier league are still settling in at their new clubs. We've seen a pattern develop over the past couple of years that if a manager doesn't bring trophies to the club, their job is in question. Clubs used to keep their managers for many years at a time back in the day, but now a days, managers are dropped and replaced sometimes within 3 or 4 months. This was unheard of until just a few years ago.

3. Anecdote

Roberto Mancini, the former manager of Manchester City, brought the club its first premier league trophy in 30 years, the next year he was relieved from his duties for not achieving this goal for a second year in a row. You'd think that a club that hasn't brought home any hardware for years and years would be forgiving if they didn't win it every year after. But Mancini was sacked none the less. There are many more examples just like this at other clubs as well. So why is this pattern developing? I'd like to break it down and get to the root of it's cause.

Exercise 4.2

As we come closer and closer to begin actually writing our paper, we have been assigned to make a tentative thesis for our paper using one of the many templates posted in The Curious Researcher. My tentative thesis is posted below.

The pattern of managers in the premier league being fired so quickly is most interesting because it seems that the bigger clubs pull the trigger faster than smaller clubs.

Exercise 4.1

To make sure we know enough about our topic from our research, we are to have a conversation with a friend to naturally figure out if we have done enough research or if more is required. I pared up with my best pal Marc and had a rousing about my research topic, Why are managers in the premier league getting fired so easily lately? Here are some of the things we talked about.

Q: What are the why, where, who, when, and what of your subject?

A: The managers in the premier league have been getting fired quite easily lately, especially by the larger clubs. The premier league is located in England. The managers have been getting fired more and more easily especially over the last 2 seasons.

Q: What do you mean by managers in the premier league?

A: Managers in the premier league are the managers of the soccer clubs in the english soccer league.

Q: How do most people see this?  How do you see it differently?

A: People see the managers getting fired so fast because they are not bringing success to their clubs.
I see it differently because I think that managers get fired so easily because the owners are so rich and fire  their managers because they expect perfection from their money.

Q: Are you kidding?  I didn't know that.  What else did you find out?

A: I also found out that it is mostly the bigger clubs who are quick to pull the trigger, but some of the smaller clubs do fire their managers if the clubs don't find success.

Q: Can you give me an example?

A: Manchester City fired their manager, Roberto Mancini one year after he brought the barclays trophy to the manchester club to hire their current manager Manuel Pellegrini.

Q: Did that surprise you?

A: No it didn't really surprise me, it has become a common theme over the last 2 seasons that if the manager isn't bringing trophies, they lose their job.

Q: Will this pattern continue over the next decade or so, or will managers see their jobs being preserved for multiple seasons again?

A: I think over the next few seasons we will see much of the same where managers get fired rather easily, but maybe not as quick. Managers who have been at clubs for multiple years seem to have much more control over the club than new managers do.

Q: Who does that effect, mostly?

A: It effects the managers mostly. Their jobs are always in question. It's either bring trophies to the club or lose your job.

Q: What should we do about this?

A: As mere fans of the game i think we can have a bit more patients and realize our club can't win every year. The managers are not ultimately what decides the game, it's the players. The players are the ones who score the goals, defend, attack and what not, too much of the blame is put on the managers I think. But it is ultimately up the owners of the club if the managers keep their jobs or not, not us.

Q: I am not sure I believe this, why do you?

A: Well we as fans do not ultimately decide the fate of the managers as that is just not our position to make the call. It is the owners finals say that really matters.

Q: What do you think we should do about it?

A: Again as fans there isn't a whole lot we can do other than not be so hard on the managers and put more of the blame on the ones who truly decide the game, the players.

Final Q: This is all very interesting but what is your point?

A: My point is, I think it is odd that these world class managers are being kicked to the curb so easily by these clubs and it should not e this way. The owners should be more patient with their managers and let them develop their squad and show them how to play the kind of soccer they want. Some of these managers get only half a season to prove themselves, this is simply not enough time to implement their coaching styles and really impact the squad.

For this post, we had to do an annotated bibliography for the sources we will be using for our essay. The resources I used are listed below in annotated bibliography form.

Miller, Sean. "NJ.com." The Times, Trenton -. N.p., 17 Aug. 17. Web. 07 Nov. 2013.

This article is a credible source for my research because it is recent and it is published on a long-standing, credible news source. Sean Miller is a well known writer for the Times Of Trenton a news source based out of New Jersey. The article is published just a few months ago on August 17th, 2013. The authors main goal in this article is to mainly tell about the many new managers making their debuts for some of the biggest clubs in England this coming season, but to also persuade a bit why the new managers will bolster the Premier League. Trenton Times generally targets educated, upper-middle class men and women who may have moderately liberal political perspectives. This audience would be interested in this subject especially if they are sports fans or if they potentially have stock in some of the clubs or sponsors of the clubs as these are subject to change with the new manager stepping in. The author includes short bios on each of the new managers participating in the 2013-14 season of the Premier League and his views on how these managers will have to improve their squads if they plan on keeping their jobs for more than one season. He also gives some background on why previous managers were fired. This all adds credibility to the source because all of this information about the managers has been verified by the clubs, the Premier League and the managers themselves. Based on my own research and knowledge I can verify that this information is true and the managers have been hired by the clubs. I agree with many of Millers views on the new managers in the Premier League. I believe this article would be very useful for my essay as it deals directly with my topic and goes into deeper detail about the new managers in the Premier League, information I can use to solidify my essay.

"Reading Fires Manager Brian McDermott." USA Today. Gannett, 11 Mar. 2013. Web. 07 Nov. 2013.

This article is a credible source for my research because it is current and relates directly to my topic, it is also published on USA Today’s main website, a high credible source. The article was published on March 11th, 2013, so the information is rather recent making the article more relevant. The authors main goal in this article is to inform the reader of the recent firing of English soccer team Reading’s manager Brian Mcdermott. USA Today generally targets educated, upper-middle class men and women who may have moderately liberal political perspectives. This audience would be interested in this subject especially if they are sports fans, specifically soccer, or are interested in English culture. The author incorporates statements from Reading and some brief over view of the background of Mcdermott’s involvement with Reading’s success. This only adds credibility to the article, the statements can be verified as they have been documented by the club and the media, and it can be proven that McDermott was indeed fired by the club. It is a bit limited due to the topic of the article though, there isn’t much else the author man reference or make parallels to as it is more of a telling of an event rather than the author giving his own views. Based on my own knowledge and research, I can verify that the article is factually true and this event did take place. I think this article is very relevant and I find it very interesting that Reading would fire their manager after him brining them so much success at the club, very strange. It is worthy of using in my article and I think it would really help my essay along.

Marcotti, Gab, David Hirshey, Lian Machintosh, Shaka Hislop, and Rodger Bennit. "Will the Prem's new managers sink or swim?" Editorial. ESPN The Magazine 19 Aug. 2013: ESPNFC.Web. 07 Nov. 2013.

This article is a credible source for my research because it’s written by 5 different sport analysis experts, Gab Marcotti, David Hirshey, Iain Macintosh, Shaka Hislop and Roger Bennett. All five of these authors are consistent writers for sports power house, ESPN. The article was originally published in ESPN The Magazine and then posted online to ESPN’s officially soccer website, ESPNFC. The article was published on August 9th, 2013. The 5 authors’ main goals in this article is to analyze and give the reader their opinions on three of the new managers appointed by some of the biggest clubs in England, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Chelsea. The Authors give a bit of background and their opinions on what the managers will have to do to keep their jobs for a long period of time. ESPN generally targets young to middle aged men who are interested in sports. This audience would be interested in this subject especially if they are interested in soccer or any of the three big clubs listed above. The authors incorporate facts about the new and previous managers and their opinions on what the managers will have to do to find success at their new clubs. This evidence builds credibility because the managers have indeed be appointed to their new clubs and this can be verified by a quick search or by looking at the clubs’ official statements. I agree with most of the claims made by the authors, but I do have some objections. The article is a bit limited as it does not include any outside sources, it is all opinion based from the authors. Based on my opinions and knowledge I can verify that the facts that they are analyzing are true, and I believe that two out of the three managers will find success while one will not, quite contrary to the article. This article is perfect for my essay as it is very similar to my topic and adds lots of new views that I can respond and analyze in my essay.

Harris, Rob. "Roberto Mancini Fired by Manchester City a Year after Premier League Title." The Washingtion Times. N.p., 13 May 2013. Web. 05 Nov. 2013.

This article is a credible source for my research because it’s written by a sports analyses expert Rob Harris who covers all the sports related topics for The Washington Times. Rob Harris is a well-known sports writer for the site and has publish many sports related articles. The article was on The Washington Times official website on May 13th, 2013, this was right after the firing of Roberto Mancini, so the information is very recent and reliable. The author’s main goal in this article is to inform his audience on the recent firing of Manchester City’s manager, Roberto Mancini. The Washington Times generally targets educated, upper-middle class men and women who may have moderately liberal political perspectives. This audience would be interested in this topic especially if they are sports fans or if they possibly have stock in one of the clubs sponsors or providers. The author mostly gives statements from the club and Mancini himself and few of the Manchester players. The evidence gives credibility because the statements and information can be looked up and they have been documented by the club and through out the press. It is a bit limited as far as outside sources go, but the topic doesn’t really call for much of academic proof and back up, the facts speak for themselves. Based on my own opinion and knowledge on the subject I can attest that the information is factually true and I agree with many of the statements he makes. I think this article is important to use in my essay because it gives a perfect example of a manger who brought success to the club, but after his first mistake, the cub was quick to fire him and get a new manager. My topic deals exactly on managers getting fired so quickly so I think this article fits perfectly.

Exercise 2.2

We are continuing on with narrowing down on the topic we want to use for our upcoming research paper. I am still seeing 'Why managers in the premier league are getting fired so easily?' will be a good fit for my paper. So far i have had no problem with finding good sources and articles on the topic, but its time to narrow down my search a bit. I am using a search engine called 'sweet search'. I found this search engine on a site recommended by the book called NoodleTools.com. The search engine is specifically calibrated to narrow down your search to specific articles. Some of the most useful results I found are listed below.

Exercise 2.2-

~Step 3~

Roberto Mancini fired by Manchester City a year after Premier ... - I found this source especially interesting because Manchester City is my favorite team. City's manager, Roberto Mancini was fired only one year after winning the Premier league title with City. This was a huge shock, he achieved the club's main goal of winning the title, then one year after being unable to repeat this achievement, the club fired him. Very interesting and shocking.

Reading fires manager Brian McDermott - This source is much like the one listed above, the same kind of situation that is. Brian Mcdermott took reading to the top flight of the premier league for only the second time in the club's history, but then was fired just one season after for lack of success. The club just did not show any patience with him and were very quick to pull the trigger.

Miller: New managers could help define the Barclays Premier ... - This article names all of the new managers in the Premier League this season, which covers a quarter of the teams in the league. Teams with new managers include some of the best clubs as well, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, and Everton. These four teams were all title runners last year, but all have new managers, very interesting. It seems that even though the managers lead there teams to a good record, if it isn't the best record, they are fired... that's a tough job to keep.

This exercise helped me to narrow my search results and see that I can use the topic of 'Why managers in the premier league are getting fired so easily?' It is topic with enough information, and i already have a lot of knowledge and insight on the topic, so i can add a lot to the conversation myself. But to fill in the other details, there are many good sources and articles on the topic that I can use to support my views. I learned a lot from this exercise, it was very helpful.
