Exercise 5.3

Today, for our english class we were told to bring a copy of our rough draft for our third essay. We started class off by swapping our papers with a partner and letting them go through and read our paper. Then once they were done, they were asked to write down what our what they thought our thesis was, my partner, Cody got mine correct which was encouraging. That means that I am communicating my point well in my paper. We were then told to cut our draft up and separate it by paragraphs. We were to make a keep pile and a discard pile. I kept all my paragraphs because they all supported my main idea. Next, we had to read the paragraph and give it a reason for what it does for our main idea. The five things the paragraph could do are: provides important evidence, explains something that is key to understanding what I am trying to say, illustrates a key concept, helps establish the importance of what I am trying to say, and raises a question that I must explore. Lastly, for this blog post we are told to find at least two ways to rearrange our paragraphs and develop two different set-ups. Finally, after this we need to come up with some questions we had for this assignment.

1. What made the set-ups different?

I could see that once i switched the order around the paper did not flow as well. I had thought about the order in which i placed my paragraphs when originally writing them so i think it disturbed the flow rather than helping it.

2. What did you learn?

I learned that it is called a rough draft for a reason. I saw that that my draft needs a lot of work and order of paragraphs, transitions, and flow are something I should look into even more to make sure i am really hitting it on the head in my paper.

3. How did this activity help you re-see you work?

I saw that I need to add more sources and I need to add more quotes as well. It is a lot of my voice, and me sharing my ideas rather than me having a conversation about the topic through other sources.
